Alex de Witte explores the universal language of beauty and the subtle forces that shape our perception of it. Intrigued by the way symmetry, repetition, balance, and harmony with nature consistently evoke a sense of perfection across cultures—a fact supported by scientific research—Alex seeks to question and reshape this shared understanding. “My work is a dialogue with perception,” he explains. “I’m fascinated by the idea that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, and I try to influence that moment of recognition.” Through his sculptural approach to form, Alex challenges both his own viewpoint and that of the observer. He experiments with the boundaries of what he calls the “initial moment of things”—a fleeting, transformative point in a design’s evolution. Is it the pregnant moment, or the one just before or after, that holds the most expressive power? Each new creation begins within a defined set of parameters. Within these self-imposed boundaries, Alex searches for a sense of equilibrium—where symmetry and asymmetry, control and spontaneity, tension and stillness converge. The result is a body of work that captures not only the essence of form but also the elusive moment in which beauty becomes perceptible.
